How Long?

Today I’m excited to participate in the Five Minute Friday writing challenge. The topic for this week is LONG. I’m literally going to set a timer and write for five minutes. Whoa. I’m usually one to deliberate too long and over analyze. But today, I need to just jump in. Is there something that God is calling you to just jump in and do? Pray first! Then jump!

How long? That is the question I ask when God has me in a holding pattern. How long? That is what I chew on when I don’t see any open doors in front and I’m asked to sit…still. I obess over the length of time in which I perceive that I’m ready to move forward. Move forward or to the the side or just plain out of the way. Isn’t that the way we do things?

We have this timeline we construct in our arrogance. Tick tock, God! I have grand plans and I want you to bless them for heaven’s sake! Oh but for God and His ultimate AGENDA. So, I’m forced to sit and be and be patient and again, just sit. As I ask how long, a word from THE WORD flashes at me and stops my wining and complaining…

STEADFAST.

It is a word that tells me to stand firm even when I’m called to just sit and wait. Solid, commited, unwaivering, reliable, devoted. Yes. That is what I want to be, right?

For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, 6 and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, 7 and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love. 8 For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they keep you from being ineffective or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. (2 Peter 1:5-7 ESV emphasis mine)

Steadfast

So as much as I want to beg God and pester Him with my How Long I will be steadfast. I will sit still and know that what He is doing IN me is just as big as the end goal of what He is doing WITH me. Not an easy task. Living steadfast takes practice and patience…neither of which I’m always excited about. But, what I do know is that I can definitlely get on board with the knowlege that…

And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ. (Philippians 1:6)

  1. Sarah, the following that you wrote RESONATES with me today: “We have this timeline we construct in our arrogance. Tick tock, God! I have grand plans and I want you to bless them for heaven’s sake!”
It is true way too often! I appreciate your honesty in the portrayal of your wrestling! Thank you for the much needed encouragement!
    Love, Gracie

  2. Loved this post! I will sit and wait to hear God’s words! In silence I will wait and then I will write prayers to Him. Yes, being retired does have it’s advantages…….time to wait!

  3. Loved your post. I have been in a holding pattern for two years. I was in TX and in BSF as a Substitute Teaching Leader. God moved us to NC, and I have been in a holding pattern ever since. Everything He had me doing there stopped when we moved–teaching in BSF, teaching at a local hospital, etc. Now I find myself waiting for what He has for me here. Two years has been hard. I wait. I sit. I listen. But as of yet, He has not shared His agenda for my life here yet. I know He has something amazing but the human side of me wants to take action. I continue to share Him on my blog always trying to glorify Him. But what does He have next for me? I can’t say but I will remain steadfast and trust in His perfect timing. Thank you again for your words that have encouraged me today. Blessings,
