Advent: Awe and Wonder Day 10

Day 10 awe and wonder

Today will you welcome our guest and my friend Ally Markotich to our Awe and Wonder journey? Ally is an answer to prayer over this past summer as I looked for friends to connect with in our new family phase that we call Kindergarten. We connected immediately and our playground conversations go way past the surface level as we most always discuss Jesus things. I love it! I asked Ally to share with us her thoughts on today’s Scripture reading and how she is seeking God’s Awe and Wonder this year.

Today’s Advent Scripture from THE VOICE: Psalm 66:1-7

1Shout out to God, all the earth.
Erupt with joy to the one True God!
Sing of the glory due His name!
Offer Him the most magnificent praises!
Say to God, “All You have done is wondrous and causes fear!
Your power is mighty, and Your enemies pretend to submit to You.
The entire earth will bow down to worship You
and will sing glory-songs to You;
they will sing praises to Your name!

5Come and witness the True God’s endless works.
His miraculous deeds done on behalf of humanity inspire fear.
He transformed the sea into dry land;
our people passed through the river on foot!
Rejoice in Him; celebrate what He did there!
By His great might, He rules forever;
His eyes watch over all the nations,
so no one should go up against Him.

Let’s be honest. Shouting praises to God is fairly easy when things are going our way. When things are rolling along smoothly, saying “thank you” to God comes naturally. But, the real challenge is how do you and I live a LIFE of praise? A daily celebration that when heartache is nipping at our heels, we loudly proclaim, “I know God and He knows me and I am in AWE!”

Psalm 66 helps us to do exactly that.

Shout out to God, all the earth.” To shout out to God, we must practice knowing God. When I first took time for Jesus in my life, I was fascinated that He would die for us. That he sacrificed His whole self for my awry ways. But, when I consider His birth, I am equally in WONDER! After all, God chose to come to earth, not as a flying superhero proclaiming His Kingship, but as a swaddled infant in a feeding trough cooing and crying. A humble beginning for OUR humble God. Jesus is worth our time.

“Your enemies pretend to submit to you.” When we take time for Jesus, we come to understand His beautiful nature. We come to recognize that the enemies in our lives ARE great pretenders. But, the life of Jesus says, “Love them anyway. Sit with them. Endure.” When we come to recognize just how loved we are, we are able to proceed with this difficult call, the mighty power of Christ within us, unbothered by their false front.

“The entire earth will bow down to you.” Look around! The perfection of nature soaks us in His presence. Mountains point high to the Heavenlies. Trees sway their branches festively. Wind whispers reminding us of His presence. Birds chirp their glory song. All of this and more, bows down to our holy, loving God. The invitation to this colorful party awaits luring us to rejoice, “No, I did not create all this beauty, but I do have a MIRACLE producing God that did!”

“Come and witness the True God’s endless works. Celebrate what He did there. From the creation story to the Goliath battle to the birth of our Savior, we see God’s hand persist in endless works. These acts engage, but do we reflect on Christ’s mighty deeds in our own lives? Where has He brought you from? How has He carried you? How is He working right now? Above all, God IS present. In order to experience Him, we must BE present. Ears that actively listen. Eyes open to seeing His glory. Hands willing to help. A mouth that pauses before it speaks. A heart bent towards love.

“Sing of the glory due His name! Offer Him the most magnificent praises!” When we practice the art of presence and the beauty of reflection, our Almighty Father will open our eyes to His Heavenly Kingdom that is all around. We will see the wonderment of His love in the ordinary. Suddenly, snow flurries gently falling from the sky capture, a simple meal of bread and soup will nourish, our children’s whining an opportunity to grow closer to the heart of Christ. When we practice knowing our Heavenly Father, he reveals His goodness to us. This is what satisfies our craving for a full Christmas and ultimately fills our soul. This is the way towards singing His glory and living a posture of praise.

Awe and Wonder:

Today, consider doing one of the following:

~Take a nature walk. Listen for sounds, smell the air, see the beauty around. Be present.

~Turn the radio and TV off. Let silence be your friend. Give God an opportunity to speak

~Use your drive time as prayer time.

~Reflect on the last few days. Where have you seen God at work? Journal!

~Sing your praises high to BarlowGirl’s “Hallelujah! (Light Has Come)”

Advent: Awe and Wonder Day 9

Day 9 awe and wonder

Even in the hectic days we call Monday along our  journey, these Mondays can take on new meaning––Awe and Wonder––if we see this day as a gift. Each day we have on this earth is a chance to take part in God’s Kingdom plan, to take part in His majesty. God doesn’t need you and I to make a difference in our world. He doesn’t need anything from us. But yet, He WANTS us to be a part of His Kingdom. He WANTS us to be His voice, His hands, His love to the world that does not yet know Him.

We can best prepare ourselves to take part in this adventure of Awe and Wonder by setting our hearts to praise Him––setting our minds and priorities toward heavenly pursuits rather than our own agenda. Today, join me in some quiet prayer journaling…

Today’s Advent Scripture from THE VOICE: Psalm 105: 1-6

We will break down all six verses of our passage for today with prayer/journal prompts to work through. So, get out your pen, grab your bible and let’s dig in.

~Verse 1: Come, offer thanks to the Eternal; invoke His holy name. Tell other people about the things He has done.

Journal: Father God, My Eternal King, I thank you for… (share what you are thankful for)

~Verse 2: Sing songs of praise to Him; tell stories of all His miracles.

Journal: Think of a time where you clearly saw God work in your life. Write out details of that moment. Write out a few words of praise and thanks. **If a moment doesn’t come to mind, write out a prayer asking God to open your heart to hear and see more of Him in your life.

~Verse 3: Revel in His holy name. May the hearts of the people who seek the Eternal celebrate and experience great joy.

Journal: Over our Advent journey we’ve covered several names of God (Immanuel-God with us, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Savior and more). Take some time to write out these names of God. Just writing them out engrains them in our heart and mind.

~Verse 4: Seek the Eternal and His power; look to His face constantly.

Journal: Lord, today I commit to seeking You instead of looking for comfort in these earthly things in my life…

~Verse 5 & 6: Remember the wonderful things He has done, His miracles and the wise decisions He has made,O children of Abraham, His servant; O children of Jacob, His chosen people!

Journal: Lord, You are wise beyond measure, today I will follow You and depend on You…

I know it might be tempting to skip over this prayer journaling, to click on to the next website with out digging in. But, when we do the work on our end, when we commit our selves to prayer and studying God’s Word, He will show up and speak to us. (Jeremiah 29:13-14) Thank you joining me in some quiet journaling time today.

Check back in tomorrow for Day 10!

Advent: Awe and Wonder Day 8

Day 8 awe and wonder

Many churches will be lighting candles today and every Sunday during Advent to mark the worship and celebration of the coming of Jesus. Whether or not you participate in a worship service today with candles and ceremony, join me in lighting a symbolic candle in our heart as we read today’s Advent Scripture. For me this passage is one quite familiar and favorited in my mind. As we’ve already committed to at the beginning of our Advent journey, I’m going to look past the seemingly familiar and embrace the sparkling Awe and Wonder in God’s Word. Join me?

Today’s Advent Scripture: Isaiah 9:6-7 in THE VOICE translation

Hope of all hopes, dream of our dreams,
a child is born, sweet-breathed; a son is given to us: a living gift.
And even now, with tiny features and dewy hair, He is great.
The power of leadership, and the weight of authority, will rest on His shoulders.
His name? His name we’ll know in many ways—
He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Dear Father everlasting, ever-present never-failing,
Master of Wholeness, Prince of Peace.
His leadership will bring such prosperity as you’ve never seen before—
sustainable peace for all time.
This child: God’s promise to David—a throne forever, among us,
to restore sound leadership that cannot be perverted or shaken.
He will ensure justice without fail and absolute equity. Always.
The intense passion of the Eternal, Commander of heavenly armies,
will carry this to completion.

If you don’t already have the choirs in your mind singing the familiar church hymn For Unto Us A Child Is Born, you will and it will probably stick in your head the rest of the day. You’re welcome. :) There could be alot worse songs running in your head over and over and over, right?

We’ve discussed in week 1 of Advent the poignant Scriptures of the Old Testament that point straight to the birth of Jesus with in the Gospels. If we were Christ followers in the generations directly following Jesus’ walk here on Earth, these Old Testament Scriptures would be our home base for study and worship of God. They didn’t yet have the accounts from Matthew, Mark, Luke and John nor the Letters from the Apostle Paul which compose the majority of our New Testament. Many believed upon Jesus and became followers based on what they heard and the good news that spread like wild fires.

Many did not believe.

Our Scripture today in Isaiah describes our King in characteristics that many Jews in New Testament times did not see fulfilled in Jesus. Many hoped for a soldier would would also be the Wonderful Counselor in Isaiah 9. They did not see Jesus as that person. For Jesus had a bigger plan than to come in and over throw the present day rule of the Roman army. So therefore many were blinded to who Jesus really is and His bigger picture purpose of the Kingdom.

How fortunate that you and I have both the holy words of the entire Bible as well as the access to the Holy Spirit as New Testament and modern day believers. If we choose, we can look to each characteristic of Jesus in Isaiah 9 and see it for ourselves as well as how Jesus has expressed His nature through out history. But, interestingly there is much more of Jesus’ nature to be revealed in the coming ages as we read in the book of Revelation.

As we join in with the believers of old, let us peal back each layer of this descriptive Bible passage with eyes toward heavenly purposes. Let us not be tempted to allow our earthly nature to preclude us from embracing these bigger picture implications of names of Jesus such as…

Wonderful Counselor–the One who guides and directs our paths (John 14:26)

Mighty God–in whom nothing is impossible (Psalm 73:26, Luke 1:37)

Everlasting Father–loving One who has no end ( Luke: 1:33)

Prince of Peace— an eternal peace beyond all comprehension (Philippians 4:7)

Yes, this is the Jesus we celebrate and worship.

Journal:

Take some time with each of the names of Jesus mentioned above. Read in your Bible each of the Scripture listed next to the names. Journal through what each name means to you personally after examining them in God’s Word. (note: these are but a few verses of MANY that cover each of these names…just a way to get us started today in the journaling)

Awe and Wonder:

Open your eyes today for ways in your life and the world around you in which God shows His nature as Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting–loving–Father and Prince of Peace. Yes these names of Jesus apply to the world as a whole but they are meant for each and every one of us in a personal way if we choose to seek out His Awe and Wonder.
