Political Junkie

Hello.  My name is Sarah and I am a political junkie.

If you are jumping on here from my post on She Seeks, I’m so glad you did.  If you haven’t read my post, Rock the Vote, check it out.

My obsession with politics started Election Night 2000.  This was the infamous year of Bush vs. Gore…I’ll not go into the details as I’m sure my blood pressure will spike at the rehashing of those crazy months following Nov. 2, 2000.

My first glimpse at the Fox News Channel and the all night coverage of red state vs. blue state lit up my dark living room well into the early morning–there was no way I was going to miss this drama.  From then on I was hooked.  Every two years I’ve had a standing date with my television and you better believe copious amounts of pizza and ice cream were involved.

I guess I get caught up in all of the hype.  The post-election night hangover isn’t fun either when life goes on that Wednesday morning.

Life goes on.

I once heard Chuck Colson {a man I admire greatly} say that no politician will save the world. No one man {or woman} has the power  to make the world a better place. We elevate these politicians, who are as human and as flawed as you and me, to a place where only Jesus–our one true Messiah–has the power to turn wrongs into right.

As an ex-Army wife, who looked at decisions made by politicans to determine the fate of her Army Officer husband’s future, I’ve often found comfort in this passage from Daniel 4:20-22

“Praise be to the name of God for ever and ever;
wisdom and power are his.

21 He changes times and seasons;
he sets up kings and deposes them.
He gives wisdom to the wise
and knowledge to the discerning.

22 He reveals deep and hidden things;
he knows what lies in darkness,
and light dwells with him.

It is God who sets up Kings (politicians: Presidents) whether good or bad.  He knows the corrupt, he knows the pure-hearted and He allows them to take the wheel and lead our country in different directions.  Nothing is surprising to God.

HE IS THE ONE IN CHARGE. PERIOD.

Now that I’ve worked all of this out in my head, figuring out just why I am a political junkie, I think I know why I have so much fun watching the debates and the political pundits’ monologues on what state will take what color-red or blue:

As much as I thrill over which politician wins on Nov. 2 and as much as I hope and pray that they stand for Biblical values, I trust that my God is in charge.  He will set up or tear down “kings” as He sees fit…when He sees fit.

There is great comfort in this knowledge and I will throughly enjoy watching the drama unfold with my pepperoni pizza and Ben & Jerry’s ice cream tomorrow night.

  1. I feel the same as you! For some reason over the last four or five years I have been so captivated by the process and also all the political pundits and round table discussion. I actually made my best friend Amy watch more Fox News than she has ever cared to watch this past weekend because I get so into everything! She was not happy with me at all! lol
    The scripture from Daniel is one that I constantly go back to as well when it comes to elections.
    I’m looking forward to watching everything tonight! :)
