The LIST

What a whirlwind of a week! I hope that you all are enjoying your Friday as much as I am. This week I was in Nashville for a meeting about a new project I’m involved in. Can’t wait to tell you about it and it does involve my next three books. :) It was a wonderful time with other authors as we came together as a community of women who love to write and love to share and teach the Bible. Today I’m flying out again in a different direction to a conference at Cairn University in Pennsylvania. I’m SERIOUSLY excited to be witht these college-age girls and share the message God has laid on my heart.

How did you like the blog post this week by my friend Sarah on creativity? This will be an exciting theme for us to explore this month. I asked in the blog post for you all to share what it is you love to do to be creative.

Today, how about we list what it is that keeps us from being creative…I will start…

~Intimidation. I just don’t always dive into a project for fear that it will turn out badly. I see other artist on Pinterest who post pics of AMAZING work and think I will never ever ever measure up…so why try?

~Lack of time. This is something where intimidation lends to the excuse of “I just don’t have time.” Sometimes that is a valid excuse expecially when I really SHOULD be working on a book deadline rather than playing with my art supplies!

~Perfection. I feel like my art should be perfect right from the get-go even though I am a novice at the craft. But, when I look at it as I’m only working on a piece of paper or a cheap canvas so who cares if it stinks, I’m not as afraid of imperfection.

So, what keeps you from being creative–whatever that creativity looks like. Many of you mentioned that you like to write. Many of you like to sing or play an instrument. Others like to decorate. Whatever it is, take some time to LIST what keeps you from creativity.

A Creative Heart

What is the first thing that comes to mind when I say the word, CREATIVITY?

~Do you roll your eyes and say, “I’m in no way creative…?”

~Do you become giddy at the thought of letting your heart free to create something…anything?

During the month of February I’m going to feature some awesome creative souls who use their God-given talent to create beauty. Writers…creatives. Painters…creatives. Photographers…creatives. Musicians…creatives.

We are all creatives.

Take a look at the thoughts my friend and fellow writer, Sarah Koci Sheilz, has on creativity.

My favorite project in first grade art class was the color wheel. We each got a bigger-than-our-faces cardboard circle and the brightest colored paints in the classroom. All we needed, the teacher explained, was red plus yellow plus blue.

At first, I was confused and surprised. Thinking back to my treasured box of 92 Crayola crayons at home, there were surely more than three colors.

Those three, we learned, were merely building blocks. The potential was so very great.

It blew my first-grader mind and still inspires me today. Every shade, hue and pigment originates from just three simple building blocks.

We put on our smocks and grabbed clean brushes and started mixing. Red plus yellow makes orange . . . yellow plus blue makes green . . . blue plus red makes purple . . . and then aqua, indigo, violet . . . and that’s only the beginning.

So it goes with creativity. We tend to limit creativity to artistic pursuits and box it into the painter’s gallery or the potter’s studio. Not so.

Creativity, like those three basic colors, might begin in the art arena. But it’s so much bigger than its building blocks.

The definition of creativity, like the colors of the color wheel, is limitless. Every occupation, every activity, every item on our to-do list has creative potential. Often, it’s not in the what, but the how.

Our creator, with oh-so much grace, has given us every tool we need to get creative. Creativity is in our bones and our soul and our very being. From those divinely-gifted building blocks, we can make much. Possibilities await, possibilities arise, all to glorify Him.

We can get creative in how we connect with friends – maybe we send a handwritten note instead of a text, or maybe we make a Reasons You Rock list, just because.

We can get creative in how we cook – maybe we finally prepare that recipe we pinned months ago, or maybe we swap jarred marinara for a homemade alfredo.

We can get creative in the way we approach our profession – maybe we tackle the meeting agenda backwards or choose a different method to accomplish that project.

We can get creative in how we show love to our family – maybe we TiVo that show to spend the evening together, or ask a question and really, truly listen.

Creativity – just like red and yellow and blue, it’s everywhere. We just have to look for opportunities to try.

What do you think about the idea that we are all creative souls? How do you “get creative”  in your life? Do you write? Do you draw or paint? Do you take cool pictures? Do you create cool graphics on the computer? Take some time to think over this and then leave a comment.

The LIST

Heck Yeah…it’s FRIDAY!

If you’ve touched base with me on the LIVE IT OUT! Facebook group you would have read that life has thrown me some lemons lately. Nothing earth shattering, just little bits of drama that add up to big inconvenineces. Wrenches in my plans that tople my well laid out schedule. As we’ve talked alot about on this blog, the best way to get over ourselves and our life drama is to step out and be intentionally grateful.

I thought it would be fun to list out ways that the LORD has shown me He loves me lately. Take some time to reflect for yourself and make your own list.

Receiving God’s LOVE…

~He showed me He loves me with beautiful landscape of icy winter. Lovely on the pine trees out side my windows. Beautiful icecicles on the roof tops.

~He provides! When we have to pinch our pennies, God provides in abundance…if I trust HIM first!

~He laid it on my mom’s heart to help me with some clothing options for an upcoming photo shoot for my next book. Mom called out of the blue and offered a ton of cute clothes so I didn’t have to go out shopping and spend money!

~He rearranged my schedule (remember those lemons?) which forced me to some much neede R&R over a long weekend. No work…just play!

Ok, your turn. LIST out how God has poured His love over you lately.
